About the museum
Museum nan Eilean is the museum of the Outer Hebrides heritage service in Stornoway, run by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. The museum service was set up in the 1980s as the first professional museum service for the Western Isles, and the museum long occupied a former school building on Francis Street in the town centre.
The museum now stands in a modern building in the grounds of Lews Castle, beside the restored castle, and opened there in July 2016. It is on one level, with a drop-off bay for coaches and its own car park, and the Storehouse Café next door is reached through a connecting door.
The permanent displays use the islands' own voices and landscapes to explain how people have lived in the Outer Hebrides. A film gallery shows the landscape in changing weather, a second gallery lets islanders describe daily life in their own words and points visitors to the local historical societies, and the main gallery looks at the land, the sea, working life and community life, and ends with a look to the future. A separate gallery at the far end shows changing exhibitions, either made locally or touring.
