About the museum
Ravenspoint Museum is run by Pairc Historical Society (Comunn Eachdraidh na Pairc) in partnership with Co-Chomunn na Pairc. The society was formed in 1990 and has its home at the Ravenspoint Centre in Kershader, in the South Lochs area of the Isle of Lewis. The centre also contains a shop, a café and a post office.
The museum shows local history and daily life in the Pairc townships and how they have changed over time. The collections include photographs and croft histories, oral history recordings and transcripts, a large tool collection, a travelling pulpit, and artefacts linked to whaling and to emigration to Patagonia. Other holdings are the Calum Kennedy collection, the Hero of Buzancy collection about Angus Macmillan (1886-1961) and the Angus MacLeod Archive, which supports research into local history, language and culture.
Volunteer guides are usually present in summer. The society also cares for the Marvig Fisherman's Barometer pillar, built around 1860 to help fishing communities predict severe weather, and publishes local booklets and a quarterly magazine.
