About the museum
Bernera Historical Society was founded in 1991 and is a registered Scottish charity. It runs the museum on Great Bernera, an island off the west coast of Lewis joined to the mainland by a bridge, and the museum is a fully accredited museum. The society is also one of the four founder members of the Hebridean Connections heritage website.
The museum is in the Bernera Community Centre, on one ground-floor level next to the community cafe and shop. Its collections include artefacts from the Iron Age village excavated at Bosta Beach, a large photo archive of Bernera's people and way of life, and a genealogy archive of local families and crofts. Interpretation boards explain events and features of local history, including the building of the bridge, the Bernera Riot and the lobster ponds.
Displays change from year to year, with recent additions including a new Iron Age case, portraits of Bernera men lost in the Iolaire disaster, items from the first Bernera Bridge, and Iron Age pottery found in Loch Bharabhat. The society also looks after the Iron Age House at Bosta, which many visitors combine with the museum. Most visitors spend about 30 minutes in the museum, and volunteers, some of whom speak Gaelic, welcome them and answer family history enquiries.
