About the museum
The Wagoners' Special Reserve was the idea of Sir Mark Sykes, 6th Baronet of Sledmere. Its men were among the first to go abroad in the First World War, driving horse-drawn wagons that carried food, fodder and ammunition to the front line.
The museum tells their story with photographs, papers, memorabilia and a medal collection. It is in the entrance area of Sledmere House. The museum also looks after a Wolds wagon built in 1861, which is kept in the Carriage House and is regularly driven with the Sledmere Shire Horses. Other collection highlights include a General Service wagon and a horse ambulance.
As far as the museum knows, it is the only museum devoted to a Special Reserve. It is run by a charitable trust that relies on voluntary contributions and on a Friends of the Museum scheme. The museum offers information for schools and downloadable guides, including an access statement.
