About the museum
The museum was founded in 2013 by two community workers in Bristol, who came up with the idea after Palestine was granted upgraded status at the United Nations. It was officially opened on 15 June 2013 by the Palestinian ambassador to the United Kingdom and the Lord Mayor of Bristol, and it was first known as the Nakba Museum. It is run entirely by volunteers and is a registered charity.
The centre says its aim is to inform people about the history and present-day life of the Palestinian people and to promote Palestinian culture and heritage. The permanent exhibition combines a historical account of Palestine with artefacts, photographs and paintings, much of the printed material having been prepared by volunteers and added to over time.
Besides the exhibition, the centre keeps a reference library of books, journals and DVDs and sells Palestinian fair-trade products, for which it received a Fairtrade Business Award in 2018. It also holds talks, film nights, cultural events and group visits, which are usually free, and offers an online virtual tour for people who cannot visit in person.
