About the museum
The Port of Blyth Heritage Centre is run by the Blyth Tall Ship charity on the quayside at the South Harbour in Blyth. It sits in the Boathouse building, which was opened around 2014 as part of the port's education and community hub and combined a heritage centre with a restaurant. The tall ship project grew out of a plan to restore a historic vessel and to teach traditional maritime skills in the town.
The centre tells the story of the Port of Blyth and of the town's shipbuilding and seafaring past, including the Antarctic expedition of Captain William Smith in 1819. The Blyth Tall Ship project has been collecting shipping and maritime memorabilia going back some 200 years, with contributions from the Port of Blyth and Newcastle University.
The port's own records form the Port of Blyth Archive. Volunteers from the Friends of Blyth Tall Ship, trained with help from Woodhorn Archive and funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, meet on Tuesdays at the heritage centre to catalogue and restore documents, photographs, charts and objects that the public had not seen before. The results are shown in exhibition pieces beside restored small boats from the project's workshop. The catalogue is available online.
