About the museum
Sunk Island lies in the Humber estuary and was turned from a small island into farmland by land reclamation. The Church of the Holy Trinity was built there in 1877 in the Early English style. It is a Grade II listed building and was deconsecrated some years ago.
Today a small group of trustees and volunteers looks after the building and runs it as a heritage centre. The display explains how Sunk Island grew from a small island in the Humber into a Victorian farming and industrial area, through land reclamation, the removal of salt from the land and its conversion to farmland. Artefacts and information boards also tell the history of the church itself.
The centre depends on volunteers and donations. It hosts a small number of events each year, such as a heritage day in summer, and the trustees have also planned craft fairs and book fairs.
