About the museum
The Cabin Museum was founded in 1978 by Andy Robertson, a Shetlander who had served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. His collection of medals and wartime items grew until it no longer fitted in his house or in the shed that was the first cabin, and it moved into the large building the museum occupies today. His family continues to run it.
The collection shows Shetland's contribution to the First and Second World Wars through items, artefacts and photographs, including uniforms, weapons and supplies. It also covers the crofting, fishing and whaling heritage of the islands. The museum is open in the summer season only.
