About the museum
Scalloway's first museum was opened in 1985 by the Scalloway History Group and ran for about twenty years. One of its main themes was the Shetland Bus, the secret wartime link between Shetland and occupied Norway. The Shetland Bus Friendship Society was formed in 2001 and unveiled a memorial to the 44 men who died on these missions in 2003.
By then the original museum had outgrown its old premises on Main Street, so the Society spent six years raising funds for a larger building next to the castle. The new museum opened in 2012, officially launched by the Prime Minister of Norway. It is owned by the community, run by the Society as a charity and staffed by volunteers.
The displays follow Scalloway and its people from the earliest settlers to the present day, covering ancient history, the old capital of Shetland, fishing and boat building, wartime life and the village today. The museum holds more than 5,000 objects. The jewel of the exhibition is the section on the Shetland Bus, which the museum describes as the most extensive collection of artefacts and information on these operations outside Norway. A reference room holds an archive of books, newspapers and Shetland Bus material that visitors and researchers can use.
