About the museum

Tissington Hall is a Jacobean mansion in the Derbyshire village of Tissington, built in 1609 by Francis FitzHerbert to replace the older moated manor on the site. The FitzHerbert family had acquired the estate in 1465 through the marriage of Nicholas FitzHerbert to Ciceley Frauncis, and the house is still the family home today. It is listed Grade II*.

The house has a central hall running through from front to back, an arrangement found in only a small group of Derbyshire gentry houses, with parlours and a stairhall on one side and the kitchen and buttery on the other. Corner towers on the garden front provide extra rooms, and in the 18th century a gallery with a central oriel window was added. A rococo Gothic fireplace follows a published design by Batty Langley.

Today the hall is open to the public on selected days each year, when guided tours of the house and its gardens are offered every half hour. Personal tours with the owner, Sir Richard FitzHerbert, and group tours can also be arranged. The hall and its estate are used for weddings and events, and the village is known for its annual well dressing.
