About the museum

The Tudor House in King Street is one of the oldest buildings in Margate and dates from the early sixteenth century. It was built as the home of a yeoman farmer and is described as a transitional house, linking medieval open-hall houses with the homes of the early modern period. Over the centuries it was altered, and in the 1860s it was divided into three cottages. Some later features survive, including plaster ceiling decoration from the Stuart period.

After the Second World War the importance of the building was recognised, and it was fully restored, a project completed in 1951. The house keeps much of its original fabric and is listed Grade II*. Its gardens include a Tudor knot garden.

The house is owned by Thanet District Council and was opened by volunteers. It is currently closed until further notice, and the exterior can be viewed from the street. The council is reviewing the future of its museums.
