About the museum
The Bronze Bell Museum occupies the upper part of Tŷ Gwyn, an old building on The Quay in Barmouth, above the premises known as Davy Jones Locker. It is looked after by volunteers of the Barmouth Sailors' Institute.
The museum shows objects and information about a Genoese ship that was wrecked about five miles north of Barmouth in 1709. The wreck site forms part of the Cherish Project, and a marine survey of the site was carried out in 2021. The displays also cover the history of the building and include historic photographs of Barmouth and its residents.
Tŷ Gwyn itself is a medieval building. Local tradition links it with Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke, and with his ward, the future Henry VII, who is said to have been hidden here. An antiquarian suggested that it was built between 1460 and 1485 on the evidence of its old roof, while a manuscript of 1654 credits Gruffydd Fychan with building it.
