About the museum
The US Grant Ancestral Homestead stands on Dergenagh Road near Ballygawley in County Tyrone. It is the farmhouse where John Simpson, great-grandfather of Ulysses S. Grant, was born. Simpson left Northern Ireland in 1760 and emigrated to Ohio.
His great-grandson Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in 1822. When he registered for the West Point Military Academy he was mistakenly entered as Ulysses Simpson Grant, and the name stuck. Grant became a leading general in the American Civil War, accepted the surrender of the Confederate General Lee in 1865 and was elected the eighteenth President of the United States in 1868. During a two-year world tour after his two terms he became the first American president to visit Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The original homestead has been preserved and is open to visitors throughout the year. Tours and an audiovisual show can be booked. The site also has a refurbished play park with accessible equipment, picnic tables and a barbecue area.
