About the museum
Winkies Castle Folk Museum occupies a historic half-cruck cottage on the High Street of Marske-by-the-Sea. The museum was founded in 1975 by Jack Anderson, a local master shoemaker, who displayed his wide-ranging collection there. When he died in 2001 he left the cottage and about 6,000 objects to Redcar and Cleveland Council, and the building was later restored and reopened as a museum. Volunteers now run it.
The cottage is described as around 450 years old and has an English cottage garden. Its low doorways are a reminder of the age of the building. In the entrance hall a timeline traces the history of Marske from the 11th century to today, with references to the burial of Captain Cook’s father, a visit by Charles Dickens in 1844, a First World War airfield and Malcolm Campbell’s land speed record on Marske beach in 1922.
