Over het museum

The playwright and pastor Kaj Munk, who grew up on Lolland and was educated in København, took over the parish post in Vedersø on the Jutland west coast in 1924. With his wife Lise and their children he lived in the parsonage, which was then called Vedersø Præstegård. Here he wrote plays that played to full houses in the interwar period, as well as newspaper articles and hunting and travel books. During the German occupation he preached and wrote openly against the occupying power; on January 4, 1944, he was taken from the parsonage and murdered.

The property has a long history: in the Middle Ages the manor Aabjerg stood on its site, which became the parsonage in 1626. The residence burned down in 1881 and was rebuilt to plans by the architect Frits Uldall. The park was shaped by the successive pastors since the early 19th century; Munk himself planted blue anemones from his native Lolland here and had a canal dug to Nørresø.

After Munk's death the state bought the residence as a memorial site, and Lise Munk lived there until her death in 1998. In 2005 the entire property passed to a foundation, which restored it extensively and transferred it to the Ministry of Culture in 2010. In 2011 the parsonage officially opened as a museum; by 2013 all four wings had been restored to their 1944 condition. An independent institution runs the site, and museum operations are handled by Ringkøbing Fjord Museer.
