Over het museum
The Escal’Atlantic project was born in the 1990s, when the city of Saint-Nazaire redeveloped its seafront and decided to turn the former German submarine base towards culture and tourism. The site is on the location of the former transatlantic passenger terminal, created in 1862. The museum opened on April 22, 2000 in two bays (alvéoles) of the base, with a scenography by François Confino and François Seigneur.
It was first run by a mixed-economy company, then from 2010 by Saint-Nazaire’s tourism and heritage body, now called Saint-Nazaire Agglomération Tourisme. The museum closed from October 2012 to June 2013 for a redesign of its scenography, entrusted to Philippe Comte, and reopened on July 1, 2013.
The route, spread over three levels, brings to life life on board great liners such as the Île-de-France (1927), the Normandie (1935) and the France (1962). Visitors pass through cabins, a bar, a dining room, the promenade deck, the engine room, the wheelhouse and the holds. Nearly 200 authentic objects, including armchairs, chests, tapestries, decorative panels, chandeliers and silverware, accompany multimedia displays and interactive games.
