Over het museum

The museum is located in Cassel, on top of the highest hill in Flanders, in the Hôtel de la Noble-Cour. This 16th-century building once housed the châtellenie of Cassel and its court of justice. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1910 and is noted for its Renaissance façade on the Grand’Place and its Flemish architecture on the garden side.

A first museum of art, history and folklore opened here in 1964. The Département du Nord acquired the institution in 1997. After restoration works, the museum reopened in 2010 under the name Musée de Flandre.

The permanent display, organised by theme, brings together about 6,000 works in the spirit of a cabinet of curiosities. Visitors can see Flemish Primitives, landscapes by Joachim Patinir or Roelandt Savery, and also contemporary creations by artists such as Panamarenko or Wim Delvoye. The terraced garden offers a wide view over the Flemish plain. The museum holds the Musée de France label and belongs to the Muzéa network.
