Over het museum

The present mill, of the Dutch type, was built of brick in 1864 to replace a wooden mill destroyed by a storm. For a long time it produced oil, and it still produces flour today. In 1912, Jérôme Vienne took over the mill, which then ran on a steam engine and later a diesel motor. In 1938, Michel Markey, a miller from a family of millers, took over the mill in poor condition and restored it; in 1980, new sails were installed with his son Joseph.

From 2000, Joseph and Véra Markey opened the site to the public. The museum of Flemish rural life, based on the collection of Marcel Leupe, and the museum of agricultural machinery and energy came into being. For the mill’s 150th anniversary in 2014, the house of his parents was reconstructed as it was in 1938, with automatons; a replica of a Persian mill (2017) and a replica of a horse-powered mill (2020) complete the park.

In July 2023, the association Les Amis du Steenmeulen announced the temporary closure of the site for an indefinite period, for health reasons. The miller Joseph Markey died in May 2024. No reopening date has been announced on the official website.
