Over het museum
The Augustinian convent of Hazebrouck was built in 1616 for a congregation of monks. Over its history the building served many functions before the museum’s collections moved in, in 1927. The museum now occupies the ground floor of this convent building, whose vaulted galleries and distinctive light create an intimate atmosphere.
The museum is devoted to local history and popular traditions. Visitors are welcomed by the giant Roland, who is joined in the ethnology rooms by the giant family Tisje Tasje. A traditional Flemish kitchen has been reconstructed, with a cradle, a spinning wheel and utensils. A collection of faience and glazed earthenware completes this section.
The most important section concerns Flemish painting of the 16th and 17th centuries, around the workshops of Van Dyck, Rubens and Teniers, with still lifes, portraits, mythological and religious scenes, as well as goldsmith’s work from the treasury of the church of Saint-Éloi. One room bears the name of Lucien Jonas and presents academic painting of the 19th and 20th centuries. Four galleries host two temporary exhibitions a year. The museum holds the Musée de France label and is part of the Muzéa network.
