Over het museum

The museum was born in Montauban after André Mas, a former deported resistance member, donated an exhibition, and other private collections were given to the town. Inaugurated in April 1989 as the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation, it was installed at 33 Grand'rue Villenouvelle. Jacques Latu, a volunteer curator until 2005, collected testimonies, objects, archives and photographs over twenty years, with the support of veterans' associations.

In 2014 the museum took the name Musée de la Résistance et du Combattant and moved into the former Antonin Perbosc library, in the heart of the town's rose garden, where the Maison du Combattant is also located. It belongs to the Pôle Mémoire, which also brings together the Mémo-Patrimoine and the municipal archives, and was reopened in March 2014.

The permanent route is divided into four spaces: the rise of totalitarianism and the march toward war; the exodus, Collaboration and everyday life under the Occupation; the Resistance and the Liberation; and finally deportation, the Shoah by bullets and the duty of remembrance. It also covers local episodes, such as the presence of the Louvre museum in Montauban, the Septfonds camp and the resistance networks.

The museum also addresses the conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries. It offers temporary exhibitions, lectures, events, film screenings and guided tours, as well as a documentation center that can be consulted by appointment.
