Over het museum

The museum was founded in 1938 by the Occitan writer and poet Théodore Calbet (1862–1949), a trained schoolteacher, with the support of the mayor of Grisolles, Joseph Marceillac. It was installed in a former 17th-century half-timbered middle-class house. Closed between 1941 and 1980, the collections deteriorated until the Association des Amis du musée Calbet was created in 1983. The building was refurbished and the museum reopened on October 22, 1988. The street façade and roof have been listed as historic monuments since 1950.

The collections illustrate everyday regional life from prehistory to the present day: decorative arts, traditions and ethnography, heritage and techniques, archaeology, regional history and art, and prehistory. Displays include Neolithic tools, Enlightenment portraits, 19th-century toys, Belle Époque accessories and 20th-century musical instruments, as well as a reconstructed workshop for making sorghum brooms, an important activity in Grisolles. Since 2002, the museum has also hosted contemporary artists who reinterpret heritage, community and territory.
