Over het museum

The museum occupies a building that has successively served as a medieval castle, an episcopal palace and a town hall. The Prince of Wales, known as the Black Prince, had a fortress built on the site in 1360 during the Hundred Years' War. After the siege of 1621 the fortifications were razed, and Bishop Pierre de Berthier built the episcopal palace between 1664 and 1680.

During the Revolution the municipality moved into the palace, and a museum was already established there by 1820. It grew in 1843 thanks to the donation of 64 old paintings by Baron Vialètes de Mortarieu. In 1851 Ingres, who was born in Montauban, gave his home town paintings, prints and art objects, and in 1867 he bequeathed the contents of his studio, including 4,500 drawings and about thirty paintings. The museum then took the name Musée Ingres and was officially opened throughout the palace on October 5, 1913.

The sculptures of Antoine Bourdelle, also a native of Montauban, found their place during the 20th century. From the 2010s, a major renovation program led by the Bach N'Guyen practice expanded and modernized the museum, which now covers 2,700 m². It is now named Musée Ingres Bourdelle.

The collections come mainly from donations and bequests by collectors and artists, supplemented by State deposits and purchases by the city.
