Over het museum

The Tuilerie des Granges was founded in 1880 by the Sébillotte family. It employed fifty workers and made roof tiles, bricks and accessories. A 300-tonne péniche carried deliveries to Paris along the Canal de Bourgogne.

In 1902, a large 30-metre chimney and a continuous kiln with two parallel galleries of 40 metres each, heated with coal, were built. The works changed hands in 1945 and closed in 1960 for three years. In 1963, Henri Laurent and his son François bought it and specialised in partition bricks and drainage pipes. After the first oil crisis of 1973, concrete roof tiles, plasterboard and PVC pipes came onto the market, and the region's tile works closed one after another.

In 2004, François Laurent founded the association Les Tuileries de l'Auxois to preserve this industrial heritage. The site is now a museum open for self-guided or guided visits. The association's guides demonstrate the production of flat roof tiles using the old presses.

Visitors can see an old pottery kiln, a chimney flue liner machine, tile and brick presses, a 1950s tomette press (for terracotta floor tiles), a potter's wheel, a collection of stamped tiles and bricks, a railway track with wagons and the former clay quarry. Since 2019, the Simon-Hoffmann kiln can be visited through its galleries.
