Over het museum

Stekkjarkot is a typical turf, stone and timber house of the kind common on the Reykjanes peninsula and elsewhere along the coasts of the country. The farm was built in 1855–1857 and was abandoned just thirty years later. It was improved in 1917 but was abandoned again in 1924. During the 37 years it was inhabited, only three couples with their families lived there.

The plot was a so-called þurrabúð, meaning that residents were forbidden to keep livestock and so depended entirely on the sea. Þurrabúðir were built on other people’s land, and tenants paid the landowner in fish or other catch. Despite the hard conditions, such cottages formed the core of the settlements that began to grow at Reykjanes and in many other places along the coast in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1921 the residents were finally given permission to keep a few sheep.

The house was rebuilt to mark the 50th anniversary of Njarðvík as a town (kaupstaður) and was opened to the public in 1993 by Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, then President. The older part of the building, with an open hearth, dates from the 19th century, while the newer part shows the state of the house at the end of its occupation, with a timber floor in the living room and kitchen and a coal-fired stove. The farm is looked after by Byggðasafn Reykjanesbæjar (Reykjanesbær Local Heritage Museum).
