Over het museum
The idea for the museum has its roots in an exhibition of pop memorabilia by the band Stuðmenn at Sigtún in Reykjavík in 1984. After the Hard Rock Café opened in Reykjavík in 1987, items belonging to Icelandic musicians began to be displayed there, and the exhibition “Bítlabærinn Keflavík” (Keflavík, Beatles Town) at Glóðin in Keflavík in 1997 led to the founding of the Icelandic Pop Museum (Poppminjasafn Íslands) in 1998.
The first sod for Hljómahöll was turned on 26 January 2008. The Icelandic Rock Museum (Rokksafn Íslands) opened on 5 April 2014 in the new building and took over from the Pop Museum. Hljómahöll is a music and culture centre that also houses the Reykjanesbær Music School and the Stapi assembly hall.
The museum has a timeline of Icelandic music from 1920 to the present. Among the objects are the drum kit of Gunnar Jökull Hákonarson, a dress worn by Emilíana Torrini, a grand piano owned by Raggi Bjarna and the band jackets of Stuðmenn. Visitors can sing in a sound booth, try out instruments and use the Rokk app, and there is a record player in the reception.
