Over het museum
Victor Hugo visited Luxembourg as a tourist between 1862 and 1865 and stayed in the country in 1871 as a political refugee. From June 8 to August 23, 1871, he lived in Vianden in a house by the bridge. The Victor Hugo Museum opened there on June 30, 1935, in the presence of Grand Duchess Charlotte; a bust of the poet by Auguste Rodin, a gift from the French state, was part of the opening.
In 1937, friends of the house founded the Amis de la Maison de Victor Hugo à Vianden (AMVHV) association, which still runs the museum. When German troops withdrew in 1944, they blew up the neighboring bridge and seriously damaged the house; it was dismantled, rebuilt and reopened on August 1, 1948. The exhibition was revised in 1971.
After a closure, the museum was completely renewed and reopened on May 11, 2002. The new design uses all of today’s presentation media and was financed by the municipality of Vianden together with the Ministries of Culture and of Tourism. Visitors get an overview of Hugo’s biography and his relationship with Luxembourg; on display are, among other things, his room with its original furniture and original objects.
