Over het museum
The museum is located in Diekirch in the buildings of the former Jean Wagner carriage factory. Jean Wagner Senior, born in 1846, had learned the coachbuilding trade in France and founded the company in 1871. It initially built horse-drawn carriages and later sold automobiles, and it was one of the first dealers for Benz vehicles outside Germany. In 1920 Jean Wagner Junior, the son, took over the business as the “Grand Garage Jean Wagner”; in the 1930s, daughter Valentine ran the firm, which also expanded to Luxembourg City in 1959. In 1997 Valentine Meris-Wagner sold the company to Mercedes-Benz.
That same year the association was founded with the aim of creating a national conservatory for historic vehicles. The Meris-Wagner family, former owners of the factory, played a central role. With support from the City of Diekirch and the state, the historic building was restored and listed as a monument. The museum opened in 2004.
Since 2004 the building has shown exhibitions on historic vehicles; since 2019, each has been devoted to a theme that changes every year. It also offers guided tours led by volunteers and runs an annual student program in which a history student spends the summer researching and realizing a topic.
