Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1970 on the initiative of members of the association “Friends of the Wiltz Broom Festival” and opened on January 24, 1970. It commemorates the Ardennes Offensive from December 16, 1944 to January 21, 1945, the day Wiltz was finally liberated. The town holds the title “Cité Martyr”, not least because of the general strike of August 31, 1942 and the attitude of its residents during the German occupation.
On display are photographs, documents, paintings, uniforms and military equipment. On the ground floor, scenes show how the people of Wiltz lived alongside American soldiers. On the first floor, three scenes tell of the American Saint Nicholas, of the musicians of the 28th US Infantry Division who defended the town, and of the vow made by the dean of Niederwiltz in his cellar. On the third floor, the horror of total war is the focus at Schumanns Eck, where the fiercest fighting of the Battle of the Bulge took place. Screens show videos that put visitors right into the action; there is also the engine of a tank, similar to the one displayed on Place Belle-Vue in Wiltz.
Above all, the museum wants to draw young people’s attention to the suffering of civilians and soldiers on both sides, so that these events are not repeated, and it promotes a spirit of reconciliation.
