Over het museum
The museum at Clervaux Castle consists of two exhibitions that are best visited together: one on the Ardennes Offensive and one with a collection of castle models. The castle itself burned in December 1944 during the Ardennes Offensive after German shelling, and was rebuilt by the Luxembourg state after the war; the work dragged on until 1994.
The model exhibition opened as early as 1970 in the west wing. It shows 22 of the country’s fortresses and castles at a scale of 1:100, recalling Luxembourg’s role as a land of fortresses; the models belong to the national heritage authority. In 1974 the exhibition on the Ardennes Offensive followed in the south wing. It was redesigned in 2017; the concept comes from curator Fränk Kiefer together with the Cercle d’Etudes sur la Bataille des Ardennes (CEBA), and most of the documents, weapons and uniforms come from private collections.
The battle exhibition shows the offensive that began in December 1944 in Luxembourg, with documents, uniforms, real weapons and staged scenes. A special feature is the “Clervaux” diorama by Claude Joachim, which shows a day of fighting around the castle in model form. Since 2020 there has also been a virtual 3D and 360° tour of the museum.
