Over het museum

Kulturhuef was created in two former slaughterhouse buildings dating from 1902, which operated until 1975 and were afterwards used, among other things, as a scout hall and social housing. In 1994, the culture minister of the time approved a printing museum for Grevenmacher; from 1995 the buildings were renovated and extended under the architect Romain Schmitz. On June 29, 2000, the house opened with a museum, a cinema and a bistro.

The museum has two permanent exhibitions. “Gutenberg Revisited” (since July 2018) tells the story of printing from the 3rd millennium BC to today and displays historic machines on the ground floor, such as the Linotype and the Heidelberg Tiegel press. The second exhibition is devoted to Jean Dieudonné, who founded a dynasty of card makers in Grevenmacher in 1754; their workshops operated until 1880.

The collection includes large printing presses, wooden and metal type, around 15,000 printing blocks and more than 1,000 playing-card sets; most of the objects are on loan from the national museum MNAHA, and the rest come from donations. Courses and artist residencies mean the historic machines are still in use today.
