Over het museum
The museum traces back to the collection of Jean Ney, who for decades gathered everything connected with rural life and the crafts of earlier times. To do so, he took over entire workshops from the surrounding area; by the late 1980s, the tools of around 40 almost or completely vanished trades had been brought together. On the suggestion of a retired teacher, this became a living rural museum for schoolchildren, which received its first school classes in September 1991 on the farm in Wahl. It takes its name from a document of 1688 that mentions a “Thielen Vogtey.”
Over more than 24 years, many thousands of children came to Wahl. To secure the museum’s future, Jean Ney acquired another farm with the same features in the neighboring village of Rindschleiden; since June 2015, all activities have taken place there.
Today the museum invites visitors to experience village life around 1900 with all their senses: a kitchen with a bread oven, a bedroom and a schoolroom with slate boards are furnished. There are also workshops on bread baking, traditional games, the village school, woodworking and handicrafts. A historic barn can be rented for celebrations.
