Over het museum
The Zubieta mill is mentioned as early as 1547 and was built in its present form in 1785, on the foundations of an earlier mill that had fallen into ruin. The Royal Council approved the project of master builder Joseph de Ayoroa on 13 April 1785, and work began a few days later. A river flood destroyed the weir in 1800 and it had to be rebuilt.
Throughout the 19th century the mill passed into private hands, and in 1867 it was bought by 82 villagers, who operated it as shared property for more than a century. In 1903 a turbine was installed to generate electricity, a power station that ceased operating in 1966.
Between 1998 and 1999 the owners handed the mill over to Zubieta town council, which restored it, keeping its original structure and materials, and opened it as an ecomuseum. The rehabilitation project received an award from the Basque-Navarre College of Architects. Today the mill still operates with its historic hydraulic machinery and is shown on a guided visit that explains the milling process and presents the customs of the valley, including the carnivals of Ituren and Zubieta.
