Over het museum

The Museo Romano Oiasso opened on 20 July 2006 in the former Escuelas del Juncal, on Eskoleta street in Irun. Its origin lies in the archaeological finds in the town: the Roman port was located in the 1990s, and in 1996 baths appeared in the back courtyard of the building, one of the reasons this site was chosen. In earlier years, research by Jaime Rodríguez Salís in the area of Higer, in Hondarribia, had pointed to the Roman importance of the area.

Oiasso lay at the mouth of the River Bidasoa, on the border between Hispania and Aquitania. It was the port of the Vascones and, during the Roman Empire, an important centre of communications and trade in northern Hispania, in the province of Tarraconensis. Its period of greatest splendour is placed between AD 70 and 200, linked to port and mining activity.

The permanent exhibition occupies three rooms with numerous remains found in the ancient city. Through everyday objects and work tools, many of them related to fishing and mining, it shows what life, food and customs were like in the 1st and 2nd centuries. The museum presents itself as the gateway to the Roman city and organises guided visits to the Santa Elena necropolis, the Irugurutzeta mines and the baths.
