Over het museum
Soinuenea originated in the project for a folk music documentation centre that Juan Mari Beltran prepared in 1994 to gather the material he had collected throughout his life. In July 1995, with the collaboration of Oiartzun town council, work began to set up the centre in the building of the former schools of the Ergoien district, ceded by the council.
Musical instruments, books, records, cassettes, tapes, photographs and films were moved there, and with the help of numerous volunteers they were catalogued and the instrument exhibition was set up. On 1 March 2002 Herri Musikaren Txokoa opened its doors to the public. The management later passed to the Soinuenea Fundazioa foundation, which maintains the centre under the guardianship of the town council.
Today the museum brings together a little over 400 folk music instruments, Basque and from all continents, organised by families (aerophones, membranophones, idiophones and chordophones), together with sound toys and instrumental ensembles of Basque folk music. An audio system allows the instruments to be heard. The documentation centre also holds collections of books, records, images and publications.
