Over het museum

The museum is based on the personal collection of the ceramicist Juan Ruiz de Luna, owner of the Nuestra Señora del Prado workshop in Talavera from 1908 until its closure in 1961. The State acquired the collection from his heirs in 1963, and since the 1980s it has been part of the Castilla-La Mancha museum network, which now runs it.

The building is a former 17th-century Augustinian convent in the historic centre of Talavera de la Reina. Its two cloisters house display cases, and the former church, known as the liceo, is used to show sculptural ceramics and tilework. In the basement is a space devoted to archaeology, with inscriptions and remains found in the city.

The collection offers a tour of Talavera ceramics from the Middle Ages to the present day, with most pieces dating from the 16th century onwards. It includes Mudéjar plates, series from the 16th and 17th centuries, 18th-century productions influenced by Alcora, 19th-century pieces, works by Ruiz de Luna himself and a display of Puente del Arzobispo ceramics. Among the most striking ensembles are tile altarpieces and the peinador (dressing room) of the palace of the Marquises of Velada, whose walls, floor and ceiling are covered with rhombus-shaped tiles.
