Over het museum

The Museo de Ciudad Real has two venues in the city centre. The building on Calle del Prado, designed by the architect Carlos Luca de Tena y Albear, opened on 15 March 1982 and houses the Archaeology and Palaeontology sections. The admission ticket is also valid for the second venue, the Convento de la Merced.

The archaeology exhibition has an educational character, with audiovisuals, stage sets and models, and traces history from the Lower Palaeolithic to the founding of the city in the Middle Ages. Its pieces include Palaeolithic stone tools, Bronze Age pottery, Iberian sculptures, Roman mosaics, a Visigothic tomb and medieval weapons. The palaeontology section brings together fossils from sites in the province spanning the geological periods from the Cambrian to the Quaternary, including the mastodon Anancus arvernensis, found at Alcolea de Calatrava, and the rhinoceros Stephanorthinus etruscus.

The Convento de la Merced was founded in the early 17th century, became a secondary school (instituto de segunda enseñanza) in the 19th century and was converted into an exhibition centre in 2005. Since 2013 it has housed the Fine Arts section: on the ground floor, paintings, sculpture, goldsmiths' work and ceramics from the 16th to the 18th centuries are displayed, and on the first floor a selection of Spanish art from the 19th to the 21st centuries, with works by Alberto Sánchez, Antonio Saura, Tàpies and Chillida.
