Over het museum
The museum originates in 1919, when Luis París, director of the Teatro Real, and Antonio Flórez proposed creating a museum-archive with theatre materials. The Ministry of Public Instruction and Fine Arts authorised the Museo-Archivo Teatral that same year, and the first exhibition opened in 1924 in two rooms of the Teatro Real. Damage suffered by the Teatro Real later forced the collections to be spread across different buildings in Madrid. In 1989 Almagro city council and the government of Castilla-La Mancha created a theatre museum beside the Plaza Mayor, and in 1990 the national collections were moved to Almagro.
In 1994 the city council ceded the Palacios de los Maestres de Calatrava complex to the Ministry of Culture to become a national museum. After its rehabilitation, the museum was inaugurated on 4 February 2004. The building was erected in the mid-13th century as the seat of the court of the Master of the Order of Calatrava and preserves a corner tower and a Mudéjar courtyard with horseshoe arches. Between 2023 and 2024 the exhibition area was extended; Royal Decree 1122/2024 gave it its current name, Museo Nacional de Artes Escénicas, and in 2025 new spaces and a new exhibition opened.
The museum, which depends on the INAEM, occupies around 2,200 m² over three floors and brings together painting, sculpture, works on paper, theatrical costume, models and small theatres, and puppets, as well as a library and an archive. Its holdings include the costumes and sets of the former national theatres, donations from figures such as José Tamayo and Nuria Espert, and works on deposit from the Museo del Prado.
