Over het museum

The Municipal Museum of Alcázar de San Juan is housed in the former Posada de Santo Domingo, a 16th-century building of reddish ashlar stone with a two-storey central courtyard and a baroque façade bearing a family coat of arms. Its private chapel was built in 1664 at the commission of Don Diego Sanabria. The town council acquired the building and turned it into a municipal museum in the 20th century; the building has been a Bien de Interés Cultural (listed heritage site) since 1991.

On the first floor is the permanent archaeological exhibition, with Roman mosaics from the 2nd to the 4th century from a villa in the municipality and finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The upper floors are devoted to contemporary art, with exhibitions by Spanish and international artists, and one room commemorates the painter and illustrator Ángel Lizcano Monedero (1846–1929).

According to the municipal tourist guide, the museum is currently closed for renovation, with no reopening date.
