Over het museum
The two-storey brick house made of unrendered red bricks in Kostelec na Hané was the last home of the poet Petr Bezruč, whose real name was Vladimír Vašek. It belonged to Františka Trnková, who offered him a permanent home after 1939. Bezruč lived here until his death, using the Red House as a place to live and the adjoining white house, converted from a barn, to receive visitors. A garden with a gazebo, where the poet sought peace, adjoins the house.
After the poet’s death, Františka Trnková donated the house to the state, and on the initiative of his friends a memorial was established here on 23 September 1962. At first the study with its library and writing desk was opened to the public; from 1977 there was a permanent exhibition in the two houses. In 2005 it was closed because of the poor condition of the building. In 2004 the Olomouc Region became the owner of the property and, after several years, began a comprehensive reconstruction.
The Red House has been open again since 2020. The white house no longer stands; it was demolished. The new exhibition was prepared by the Muzeum a galerie v Prostějově: in the former study there are ten panels about Bezruč’s life and work, supplemented by small objects, and the second room contains items of everyday use.
