Over het museum
The Galerie výtvarného umění v Chebu was founded in 1962. The first collection items, especially of old art, were works transferred from the Cheb Museum, the National Gallery in Prague and the Ministry of Culture. In its early years it bought mainly the more conservative currents of modern art; from the 1960s, purchases from bequests also became part of the strategy.
The gallery is an art museum focused on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, and on the Gothic art of the historical Cheb region. Its collection consists of three distinctive parts: older art, namely Gothic sculpture, Cheb marquetry (intarsia) and Baroque painting; Czech art of the 20th century; and contemporary art.
The gallery is housed in the New Town Hall Palace on the main square in Cheb. On the second floor there is a permanent exhibition of Gothic sculpture and the Velká galerie (Great Gallery) for large exhibition projects; on the first floor a permanent exhibition of 20th-century Czech art; on the ground floor the Malá galerie (Small Gallery) and the museum café; and in the basement an exhibition of contemporary art with an educational centre. Since 2016 the gallery has also included the Retromuseum in the neighbouring Schillerův dům, which is devoted to the lifestyle and design of the 1960s to 1980s in Czechoslovakia. The founder is the Karlovy Vary Region.

Step-free toilets are on the ground floor of the gallery (Malá galerie) and in the Retromuseum (permanent exhibition). It is advisable to announce your visit in advance (gallery ticket office +420 354 422 450, Retromuseum ticket office +420 725 431 300), because the stair-climbing lift is always stored in one of the two buildings and an access ramp must be set up at the gallery.
