Over het museum
With about 100,000 collection items, extensive documentation holdings and a study library, Muzeum Cheb is among the most important museum institutions in western Bohemia. During the Second World War the valuable collections were evacuated; after the war the municipal museum merged with the ethnographic collection and in 1955 took over the function of the district museum. In 1956 a new exhibition in twenty halls was opened; in 1995 the exhibition of the Krajské muzeum Cheb underwent a complete reinstallation.
The art-historical exhibition introduces the history of the town and region and its applied-art collections, for example the Cheb antependium – a bead embroidered altar cloth from the 14th century, Gothic and Baroque sculptures, and an example of Cheb relief marquetry. Among the unique items are the oldest bell in Bohemia, dating from 1286, and Valdštejn's horse, shot at the Battle of Lützen in 1632, which is reportedly the oldest taxidermy specimen in Bohemia. The exhibition is complemented by a display of Cheb ceramics, a small lapidarium in the courtyard and, since 1998, the Valdštejn picture gallery with seventeen portraits.
The last part of the main circuit is the exhibition Chebsko poklidné a bouřlivé, opened in 2007, which maps the history of the town and surroundings in the 19th and 20th centuries, including the consequences of the Second World War and the era of the Iron Curtain. The museum is a contributory organisation of the Karlovy Vary Region and also manages the Statek Milíkov.
