Over het museum
The 600 mm gauge railway was built around 1900 as a mine and industrial railway to transport ceramic clays and sands from the area around Skalná. For decades clay was extracted in the Soos reserve, and the railway linked the pits with the processing plant. Steam locomotives appeared on it in 1909; later they were replaced by diesel locomotives.
Freight operations ended in 2017. The association Iron Monument Club Plzeň had been working since 2006 to create a tourist museum railway between Kateřina and Soos, and the first passenger train ran on 14 April 2012. Today the railway is operated by the public benefit company Muzejní úzkorozchodná dráha Kateřina.
The site comprises the Kateřina depot, which is a cultural monument, and a short line just under two kilometres long between the stations of Kateřina and Soos, with the passing loop Rampa. Operation is seasonal, and trains run on selected weekends and public holidays. The repairs of the BN30 locomotives and the bogies of the DM12 carriages were supported by a state programme for restoring historic rail vehicles.
