Over het museum

The castle in Světlá nad Sázavou grew up on the site of a Gothic fortified house, which Štěpán of Šternberk had built on the left bank of the Sázava in 1393. The most important owning family were the Trčka family of Lípa, of whom Burian III Trčka rebuilt the south wing as a Renaissance hunting seat. After the fall of the Trčka family in 1634 and the confiscation of their property, several noble families succeeded one another on the estate; in the Baroque period the east wing was begun, and under Count František Josef Zichy the castle acquired Empire elements, for example the gilded stucco ceiling in the Knights' Hall.

The castle took its present form in the second half of the 19th century under the Salm-Reifferscheidt family, who merged the buildings according to plans by the Viennese architect Svatoš and added an orangery with a fountain. In 1914 the manufacturer Richard Morawetz, a friend of President T. G. Masaryk, bought it; his family emigrated to Canada before the war. From 1948 a secondary agricultural school occupied the building for some sixty years, and in 2011 the castle passed into the town's ownership.

Since 2013 gradual reconstruction has been carried out by private owners, and since 2022 under the direction of the Marian family. The castle is open all year round: it offers guided tours with thematic circuits, the castle orangery, a restaurant with café, accommodation and the publicly accessible castle park.
