Over het museum
The Capuchins originally had a monastery outside the city walls, which was razed to the ground during the Swedish siege in 1645. In February 1656 they moved the remains of their fellow brothers into a newly established crypt beneath the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross. Until 1784 the crypt served as the final resting place of friars and their benefactors; the reforms of Emperor Joseph II then banned burials within towns. At that time about 150 Capuchins and 50 benefactors rested beneath the church.
Ventilation of the crypt led to the natural mummification of the bodies. From the mid-19th century visitors came to honour the Pandur commander Baron František Trenck, whose remains were transferred to a tin coffin in 1872. The Capuchins became guides, and visitors rang the bell at the monastery to announce themselves. In 1889 Archduke Franz Ferdinand visited the crypt.
After 1950 the communist regime removed the order from the monastery, but tourism continued. The order regained the monastery in 1990. Today the crypt is part of the working Capuchin monastery and is open to visitors every day except Christmas and Easter.
