Over het museum
The Mendelianum is a modern museum of Gregor Johann Mendel with fifty years of tradition, run by the Moravian Museum in the centre of Brno. The visitor centre was created in the authentic premises of Mendel’s scientific society, where Mendel worked. The entrance is from Zelný trh (Cabbage Market) or Kapucínské náměstí (Capuchin Square).
The exhibition, which has a number of interactive elements and lets visitors become scientists themselves, presents Mendel’s life and work and their links to today’s genetics, molecular biology and other fields. It is divided into ten thematic sections, from the scientist’s personality and an introductory section on the genetic programme, through the scientific environment of Mendel’s discovery and the conference hall, to Mendel’s laboratory, a molecular biology laboratory, genetic stories behind the Nobel Prizes and Mendel’s plants.
Also included are a historic hall and the final section, Mendelovo Brno (Mendel’s Brno), which invites visitors to walk in Mendel’s footsteps around the city. On Wednesdays the Mendeliana laboratory can be tried out under the supervision of an instructor after prior booking. The multimedia platform is temporarily out of service for revision.
