Over het museum

The Moravian Museum (Moravské zemské muzeum) was founded in July 1817 by an imperial decree of Francis I. It is one of the oldest museums in the Czech Republic and, after the National Museum, the second largest museum institution in the country. Its collections comprise more than six million objects from the natural and social sciences. The museum's founding was supported by Enlightenment enthusiasts for local history from among the Moravian nobility and scholars, who wanted to promote economic development and regional patriotism.

The main visitor building is the Dietrichstein Palace on Zelný trh (Cabbage Market). It was built in 1614–1618 by Cardinal Franz Dietrichstein, Bishop of Olomouc, as one of the family's seats, and is an important example of Moravian Baroque architecture. During the Estates' Revolt of 1620 Frederick of the Palatinate, the so-called Winter King, stayed in the palace; in 1748 Empress Maria Theresa did; and in October 1805 the Russian commander Kutuzov.

In 1837 the palace was adapted for judicial offices, and later rebuilding altered its Baroque appearance; in 1928 a third floor was added to the main wing. The museum bought the building in 1911, and since then it has been used mainly for exhibitions. Today visitors can see permanent exhibitions devoted to fossils and ancient life in Moravia, prehistory, Great Moravia, Karel Absolon and the history of Moravia in the 20th century. The museum also includes further sites in Brno and the rest of the region, for example the Anthropos Pavilion and the chateaux at Jevišovice and Budišov.
