Over het museum

The Klenotnice drahých kamenů (Treasury of Gemstones) is part of the Nová Paka Municipal Museum. The area around Nová Paka is geologically very varied and renowned for semi-precious stones and petrified stems of Palaeozoic plants. Reports of the collecting and processing of gemstones in Podkrkonoší go back to the 14th century, to the time of Charles IV. At first it was collectors from northern Italy who pursued them; later local residents did too, supplementing their income in this way.

The basis of the museum collection consists of finds from private and school collections of the mid-19th century, which are constantly being added to. The Klenotnice building, opened in 1996, was erected to store and display the natural science collections. The exhibitions were substantially rebuilt in 2010 to 2012. According to the museum, its collections are highly valued and in many respects surpass those of larger institutions.

Visitors can get to know volcanic rocks and minerals in the exhibition on volcanism, fossils in the exhibition on geological development, and cut and polished stones in the exhibition on gemstones. The largest part of the exhibition on geological development is devoted to silicified wood of Palaeozoic plants, and the largest petrified tree stands in the garden in front of the Klenotnice.

A separate exhibition is formed by the collection of spiritualist drawings. Nová Paka became a centre of the spiritualist movement thanks to Karel Sezemský, who founded the Spirit publishing house here. The museum's collection of drawings made during séances is the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic and one of the largest in Europe.
