Over het museum

Suchardův dům in Nová Paka was built in 1895–1896 by the sculptor and woodcarver Antonín Sucharda the Younger as the family’s residence and workshop. The neo-Renaissance corner building has a richly decorated façade with sgraffito based on designs by Mikoláš Aleš and sculptural decoration in which members of the artistic Sucharda family took part. Witty and wise sayings on the façade catch visitors’ attention even from outside.

The Municipal Museum in Nová Paka was founded in 1908. The town bought the house in 1949 for the museum; after repairs in the 1950s and 1970s, a historic exhibition was opened there in 1976, and exhibition rooms were created on the ground floor. The façade was last restored in 2001.

Today the house is the seat of the museum’s historic exhibition. It presents the history of Nová Paka and the surrounding area, the influence of the Pavlán monastery, folk architecture, crafts, puppetry and nativity-making, as well as spiritualism and motoring. The most valuable exhibits include the Nová Paka nativity scene, carved by Jan Mádle, and works by members of the Sucharda family. On the ground floor, exhibitions by visual artists alternate.
