Over het museum
The Olomouc Tvarůžky Museum in Loštice tells the story of the original Czech cheese with an EU protected geographical indication, from the first historical mentions to modern production. The earliest reports of tvarůžky go back to the 15th century, and the name tvarůžky first appears in an Olomouc inventory from 1583. From a peasant product sold at the Olomouc markets it became known as Olomouc tvarůžky, and it was also awarded at the world exhibition in Vienna in 1872.
The Wessels family of Loštice is key to the modern history of tvarůžky. Josef Wessels began producing tvarůžky here in 1876, and his son Alois built the largest tvarůžky enterprise in Austria-Hungary. The initials A.W. are still carried by the company that operates the museum.
The exhibition, opened in 2014, also covers the period when hand production was replaced by machine production, and the fates of the Wessels family. Guided tours and tvarůžky tastings for groups are part of the visit.
