Over het museum
The museum is housed in the Havlíček House on Havlíček Square, with a stone oriel and a small tower. The house belonged to the family of Karel Havlíček Borovský from 1832 to 1880, when his widowed mother sold it to the municipal savings bank. The history of the Havlíčkův Brod museum goes back to 1874. Since January 2025 the museum has been merged with the town gallery into the institution Galerie a muzeum Vysočiny Havlíčkův Brod, which is based in two houses on the square and combines the presentation of art, history and ethnography.
On the first floor, the permanent exhibition Karel Havlíček Borovský – život a odkaz (Life and Legacy) occupies four rooms of the original flat of the Havlíček family. In the original mid-19th-century interior are personal relics and period objects. Havlíček lived here with his wife Julie and daughter Zdenka until he was taken into exile in Brixen in December 1851.
In the underground of the museum, since 2024, there has been an exhibition, Panuška’s Panopticum of Ghosts, inspired by the world of the painter Jaroslav Panuška. Under the direction of teacher Dan Koráb, 92 students of the Havlíčkův Brod grammar school took part in its creation. Demons, witches, water goblins and other figures inhabit its corridors and nooks.
